I'm not getting insulted, I am merely uncovering their ignorance.

people are ignorant for preferring a high level of musicianship???

and since when was grind unintelligent? you obviously have never listened to Discordance Axis...

read what I said - clever and intelligent songwriting

1 minute songs without any melody whatsoever can never ever = clever and intelligent songwriting

no...people should accept music regardless of the level of musicianship. thats why I can listen to something like Fear Of God one minute and then something like King Crimson or Hawkwind the next.

and thats just your opinion. why don't you read the lyrics of a Discordance Axis song? have you ever listened to the types of chords and changes that they use? just cause something's abrasive and abrupt doesn't mean its unintelligent.

I can relate to Selling Out or ripping off the styles of other bands. But in any case, I feel Metal is such a perfect genre that even the lamest band may have something to offer.

Which is why Metal > all other genres.

Yes.

Also, bands with a lack of feeling tend to drive me away. No matter what the genre, if there's no emotion, then I likely won't like it. This even applies to grindcore.

I think you are misunderstanding the point that some people were trying to make, as well

simple does not = bad musicianship (hell I enjoy lots of 80s metal + thrash that are fairly straightforward) and musical skill is certainly not entirely determined by technical complexity

@ grinder

@ grinder

true, but you're just as bad as an MOR pop fan when you dismiss grindcore as "pointless noise". grindcore can be art, too.

that's not the case at all, I enjoy some of old carcass, as well as nasum and pig destroyer etc...

but for the most part grindcore offers very little of what I seek in metal (and music in general), so I stay away from it

and thats fine I guess, even though IMO I believe you're missing out on a lot.

Why the fuck did you close my thread you bitch of gigantic proportions. I WAS ONLY TALKING ABOUT A METAL BAND in the " general metal discussion thead" AND YOU FUCKING LOCKED IT FOR NO REASON. It was in the "GENERAL METAL DISCUSSION" thread and you fucking closed it when it was in the correct slot the "GENERAL METAL DISCUSSION" slot. I hope you rot in hell cause you are a bitch and you badly hurt my feelings.

Looks like someone needs a hug.

I think some of the options are a bit vague. "Lack of skill" could mean many things. Lack of skill as in lack of technical proficiency with instruments or lack of skilled songwriting? The former isn't really that important to me. There are plenty of bands where you can tell the members aren't the best players ever but they can still write captivating songs and perform them with conviction which I very much prefer over listening to some Berklee wankers who clearly know their instruments inside and out but couldn't write a decent song to save their lives.

Sounding like a copy of another band isn't necessarily bad either, as long as it's done well and it's a style of music that isn't completely saturated yet (so not like the melo-death scene). A recent example of a band that is clearly a clone is Daylight Dies who take more than a few hints from old Katatonia. But they do it pretty well and I still haven't found too many other bands that are playing that style of music the way I like it. So I'm fine with it then, even if they aren't exactly the most original band ever.

songwriting >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> any thing else in terms of why I like or dislike a band

technical proficiency, vocals, production, etc... are all just icing on the cake

Agreed. That very reason is why I adore Blind Guardian but despise Savage Circus despite the two of them bearing distinct similarities.

@ CAIRATH

"Lack of skill" is indeed pretty vague. I think I had both songwriting and technical skill in mind, only I was hesitant to mention songwriting skill since it's obviously a bigger drawback to a band than technical deficiency is (though sometimes these go hand-in-hand). I made the poll with the intent of keeping the options roughly equivalent in "shittiness" so that there wouldn't be a clear, hands-down winner. What can I say?
