Erm, the only reason I would dislike any band is if their music doesn't appeal to me. They can be crap at playing or sound like another band or have "sold out" or whatever other bollocks, but what it comes down to is whether or not I'm liking what I'm hearing.

Why the fuck that isn't in the poll is beyond me.

Pick the one which is most likely to steer you away from a band. Note: assume that the band in question plays a style that you would normally like. Obviously there's no point in picking the "sellout" option with a band like Linkin Park in mind - that's just the nature of Linkin Park.

Once you see an item of that band's merch in a HotTopic window.

It's mainly true, well in the context of modern day "metal." How often do you see really good bands advertised by Hot Topic. Not really often at all.

That's true, but I think a band would have to start sucking before their merch was sold in HT.

Actually I see the guys point now, so I take-back my rolleyes.

Indeed, but I think passion is definitely kind of lost on a lot of metal nowadays anyway...see we can get along in some opinions! :p

To me a big part of whether something gets on my Top Albums of the Year list is their concept and how well they present themselves. This separates shitty brutal death from the true and unique stuff to me, for instance. Though a lot of the time even though BDM is among my favorite genres of metal, a lot of the progenitors' albums do not make it into my top lists because of the lack of presentation.

Yeah, brutal death metal nowadays, for the most part, is guys who no doubt have lots of playing talent but just want to "out-brutal" the next band. Now, if they can get a concept in my mind, create actual songs that make musical sense, which ties into the presentation you are talking baout, then they will be onto something.

More DM bands nowadays need to look back to the early 90's for inspiration imho. Only a handful of them are really great at what they do.

I tend to agree, but I also like old-school as much as new-school...I think plenty of stuff out there today is good, you kind of just have to look for it to some extent.

The last great album to do brutal death metal with flair was Wormed's Planisphaerium, in my opinion. The concept undeniably tends to overshadow their playing a lot of the time, but they also seem to break through with a pretty damned good style. Saprogenic's The Wet Sound Of Concrete is conceptually brilliant in a different sense...not really lyrically, just thematically. Very macabre, and the sound of the album supports this...the guitar production is comparable to a treble-ier Amorphis circa Privilege Of Evil...now THAT is fuckin' evil strength shit.

Wow, great criteria for not liking a band. It could be the greatest band in the history of metal- perfect at everything, but once a t-shirt with their logo appears in a Hot Topic window, they fucking suck.

I bet you pee sitting down, don't you?

I see people think crappy and lack of skill is more important of a factor than selling out.

I see.

why don't all of you get rid of your Beherit and Darkthrone records and buy some hot topic approved metalcore garbage like As I Lay Dying instead?

Maybe some of use would like to choose more than 1 option?

i chose crappy lack of skill, but i also think a sellout band is shit too. If you truely were into metal for the music, and respected your fans, then you wouldnt sell out. Its just a slap in the face to your fans that have listened to you since you were just starting out.

who gives a shit if a band sold out or not?

ignore their shitty albums and listen to the good ones...

people say this about metallica, but what the hell do I care what they did after 1990??? ride the lightning and master of puppets are still 2 of the greatest thrash albums ever

I would say another huge reason for disliking an album is due to a lack of inspiration/energy/passion/emotion. If it sounds like a band is just going through the motions, then that album will most likely suck ass

they've tarnished their reputation by making St. NuMetal.
