Most Underrated Metal Guitarists?

How about Rob Marcello?

I don't think anyone has mentioned this guy yet... but he's the current guitarist for Danger Danger. He's the epitome of a "shredder" guitarist stuck in the 80's. I think Boss/Roland has payed him off so he doesn't do anything else but gear demos for them at NAMM and other clinics. LOL. If you go to youtube, type in his name, it pulls up a TON of different Boss/Roland gear demos he's done. But damn... this guy can playyyyyyyyyyy

Here are a few vids of him playing live:

Well I do totally agree something doesn't have to be "slow" to have feel, I just picked the above as an extreme example to silence those who think Petrucci is like on the level of mechanical boredom of, say, Rusty Cooley :loco: That said, while Jani from Sonata and Per Nilsson IMO nail the "fast with feeling" thing, I remember not being impressed or moved by one single solo on ToT (and completely abandoned the band after), and the ending of "This Dying Soul" is just 100% inexcusable IMO :erk:

Yeah my bad, That wasn't meant to be DIRECTLY fired at you, I think we're pretty much in agreement on this. Except, I'm not that big a fan of Sonata's lead player. He's great, just not at the level of "ill." But perhaps I'm just not familiar with their catalogue enough to judge.

I also wanna add Jon Donais from Shadows Fall. A little Massachusetts of me, but the dude's playing on The Art of Balance is really killer. Even if he does slop it up live at times.

.. Damn i wish i could play like him. D;

Lots of pentatonics, tapping, and weird phrase work with the trem without sounding progressive  :kickass: I think what's great is how he can double track his solos (or that's how it sounds) so cleanly unless he has some doubler effect going on, cause all the trem work is precise.

Any idea on his amp/main gits? RR in that vid, Jems in another. I'd guess some boosted 800's.

He has that typical swed/fin tone, mattias ia eklundh and early sinergy (alexi + roope) come to mind, had the same sorta tone goin on.

Misters Smith and Murray come to mind...

But really underrated guitarist in my opinion is Arto Räisälä from Requiem (FIN). I have always liked his playing. Not many videos available... Arto/R2 is the blonde bomber. The song is Broken Alliance from their debut album The Arrival released in 2001.

Another video from the recording sessions for their second album Mask of Damnation (2003,spoken in Finnish, sorry):

Solos from 4:20 onwards.

Song from their latest (last?) album Requiem: Forever (2005), Painting the Wind:

I dont think he plays that much pentatonics actually, although allot of it seems "pentatonic inspired". :loco:
And im pretty sure that the entire song "explorer" is double tracked which is badass(But on the other hand, listen to Dokken - Mr. Scary, its 17 tracks!)!

I think he used Peavey 5150's actually, not sure though.. i have searched my ass off to find what gear he was using, only to find one picture of him live with his RR and a 5150 in the back. ;X

WEll their self titled album with the explorer came out in 89 while the 5150 came out in 91. sooooo.....

I still place my bets on an 800

Jørn Viggo Lofstad - Pagan's Mind, Jorn (not himself, but Jorn Lande), and Beautiful Sin.

Fredrik Grünberger - he played guitar on the first three Mind's Eye albums then seemed to disappear off the face of the earth it seems (he went off to be a stock broker.) Real shame as he is such a beautiful player.

I love just turning down the lights and listening to Mind's Eye - they are a more progressive rock/metal act from Sweden with so much talent it's a shame they have never gotten more recognition that they have. Sure they are a more pop form of prog rock/metal, but it's so damned good and the production work on their albums is just stellar. I use their album "A Work of Art" as one of my top reference CD's. It's a shame I can't find any examples from that album to put up, but it is crystal clear and simply dripping with class.

Well - I did find one example, but it is a much more pop oriented song from "A Work of Art" - here is "These Open Arms" (Fredrick is not in the picture as this is a more recent band shot.) It's also a very short example of his playing and the solo is near the end of the clip.

If you listen to some of their other stuff you will notice that after "A Work of Art", they took a more keyboard oriented approach as Fredrik left and Johan Niemann, their bass player, took over both bass and guitar duties and quite frankly he is a good guitarist but not up in the class that Fredrik was (just a personal opinion.) I still love the stuff they release and will continue buying their discs, I just wish Fredrik would come out of hiding and play on something regardless what it is.
