Most Underrated Metal Guitarists?

I really don't see why people are so impressed with Tipton. I've never been a fan of Priest; but all this talk about how great this guy is, i've been on a Priest listening spree this weekend... and I have to say I don't see what you all see in him.

Maybe it's just one of those things where if you grew-up on Priest music, and if he was your inspiration to play guitar, then I could see how you might worship him. But for a non-Judas listener like myself, I don't see anything magical about his playing. Maybe I'm missing something? He does have some good solos and some great moments, but nothing that makes me think that he's this almighty "god" that people make him out to be.

I'm not bashing Tipton, and i'm not bashing any of you that think he's an awesome player... it's just a viewpoint that I don't share and quite frankly don't understand.

Yeah, I hear ya, and while he has some pretty damn impressive stuff on the Painkiller album, it's still not the most technically amazing stuff I've heard - really, I just love the melody and note choice in his solos, and how identifiable they are!

And +1 billion to Peter Wichers, I only neglected to mention him cuz I wasn't sure how underrated he was!

Maybe it's just me, but the leads on All Guns Blazing as I mentioned in the 8 string hellraiser thread is an awesome set of leads, but again maybe that's because I'm a sucky guitar player, and anything like that just impresses the shit out of me.

You are not alone, man :) Tipton is no Petrucci shredder and this is absolutely OKAY! Sometimes one single tone is better than thousand scales rushed down! Music is no sport, Music is feeling, emotions IMO!!!

my vote is or Devin Townsend. I've seen him with the Devin Townsend Band twice and when he wants to, he can pull out some awesome, tastey solos.

Dude, check my post on page 1 in this thread. I mentioned Jari already :worship: And I know, he likes Mastered by Muppets. This is some crazy honour for me (I´m Flex6660 on youtube) I made the video together with Dan (artworks & production) and played the fast Solo on this tune :)

Nah dude, that's perhaps a valid point about many shredders, but Petrucci's solos in the old days were absolutely bursting with feel, he was so freakin' expressive it was ridiculous! I mean, good god, go to 3:07 in this vid:

And then listen to Labrie try (and fail) to hit the high notes after

i forgot about joe haley! that guy is amazingly tight and has awesome hybrid technique!

go to 12:15

am i the only one who thinks john petrucci's 3 note per string technique is kinda sloppy? it might just be the way he picks or something..

but his phrasing and bending in the early stuff is sweeeet :)
