Porcupine Tree - The Incident (2009)

I think Wilson writes good personalized lyrics. When he tries his hand at social commentary, though, he becomes a little too preachy. Like Tool, but without the Maynard voice to make you forget that the lyrics are pussy whining (and worse than Tool lyrically, besides).

The only way to make social commentary work in lyrics is to make the message subtle or have the right vocalist. Or have a message that everybody can get behind (like "sweaty rape to all neo-nazi cum recepticles!!"... everyone can get down with that). Otherwise it always comes off as too preachy.

Anyway, looking forward to this.

Ya, idk why a little criticism = bashing. I mean it's one thing to say things like "Metallica didn't do shit for metal and are overrated x1000000000" but what the hell is wrong with "[PT/Opeth] are great bands but sometimes their lyrics are a bit lacking."

Way to put words in my mouth. Never did I say that "Metallica didn't do shit for metal." And I think you know that.

And here I thought we'd come to an understanding with our last exchange in that thread.

I absolutely agree with you.

Give me proof, i don't think steven would say that, unless being sarcastic :p
They worked on all songs together dude...i can post the interview, that's why steven moved to tell aviv half a year! :)

I don't have proof, it was in an Israeli newspaper before the second album was released. You can either take my word for it, or go on believing what you want, it doesn't affect me either way.

And I posted the song credits exactly as they are written in the cd sleeve of the second album.

And he moved to Tel Aviv cause it's a fuckin awesome city.

wow, never noticed that...you're right, 1000 people and epidemic was probably written together then...Wonder what he meant with the writing together part...not sure, they probably wrote the groundstructures and lyrics to those songs, and made them to actual songs together.

My favourite blackfield songs: Open Mind, Blackfield, Scars and Hello
Blackfield 2: 1000 People, This Killer, My Gift Of Silence and End Of The World...
...Not sure why i posted this :D

When did I say that was directed at you, or that either quote was actually taken from anyone? I was merely comparing relevant examples of bashing and of criticism to show that no one's bashing PT and no one needs to get butthurt.

One should consider that FoaBP is written with reference to the novel Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis. While the novel is told from the father's point of view, the record is mostly from the son's point of view, although "My Ashes" reflects the regrets of the son's dead grandfather as they scatter his ashes, referencing the scene at the end of Lunar Park. Pretty tough thing to do in terms of putting some lyrics together and unless you have actually read the book, some reservation of judgement about how good the lyrics are should be considered, perhaps.

This is hilarious :D:D...i found a translator, HELLO THE GUY!

Much more qu' one énième project of Steven Wilson, intellectual guide of Porcupine Tree, Blackfield takes with this second album of the paces of true group. Although all l' attention of the Western fans goes on Wilson, Blackfield is especially actually an opportunity for the star Israeli Aviv Geffen of s' to export with l' foreigner. The 2 accomplices discuss here with naturalness and relaxation the second album resulting from their single and original collaboration. Hello the guy! First of all when did you find time to write this album? That should not be easy with the overloaded timetable of Steven… Steven: I think that one wrote 70% of the album… Aviv: 72%!

In English

Steven: 72,3% actually (laughter) during the 2 last years. To tell the truth certain songs were made up before even as the first album left. We played them in concert and we knew that they would finish on the next album. Aviv: I wrote the title Miss You on our first round, in the bus. Steven: Some titles come from the career solo of Aviv. Was The End Of The World written there is 5/6 years it is well that? Aviv: Yes. Steven: It is right a new version translated into English. Aviv: 1000 People also comes from one of my albums.

Steven: Concerning the 2 or 3 titles which I wrote for l' album, I succeeded in finding time. I put myself the pressure (laughter). But this album was written during one long period. Practically 2 years. We did not record anything before having the feeling to have 10 strong songs. From this moment there, was very assembled very quickly. There are thus some falls of the first album… Steven: Not, they are not falls. These titles were written just after the recording of the first album but before its exit. I do not want absolutely that these songs are perceived as falls of the first album. Aviv: We had even 20 songs and we reduced the album to 10 titles.

In this new album it is always question of sad and introspective feelings. Steven, in the title 1000 People you sing that a thousand of people shout your name and smile you but that at this time precis you want to die. Is this a strange feeling which you sometimes feel on scene? Steven: They are fine wordss but it is Aviv which wrote them. It should explain them to you. Aviv: Ok. I wrote these words after a large concert which I gave in Israel in front of 20.000 people. After this concert, I returned to the house and I felt very only. To be a celebrity is something of strange because you much love is shown but actually that does not help you. Because very of a blow much of people shout your name but then you completely only feel. This title speaks about my life. To be known is something of sometimes sad. It is strange because everyone asks us questions in connection with this song.

Steven: It is the best title of the album. Aviv: Not I am not agreement. It is my song but it is not the best. Steven: If I assure you. Aviv: And you think to you that it is about the best title of the album? Yes. In fact it one of my is preferred with Epidemic and Once. Steven: (addressing itself to Aviv) You see! You are content now? As was already the case with Cloudy Now on the first album, there are always very pessimistic titles like End Of The World on the new one. That to have with the fact that Aviv lives in an area of the very difficult world? Aviv: Undoubtedly. Ca helps but I think that the world in general fears. For me the world in which we live is too cold, too individualistic. MTV, Internet, Itunes. All becomes too fast, without passion, surface. For me Blackfield is our heartfelt cry to me and Steve. The sentimental wounds are also a topic scour. Did you cross dramas in love so much where is absolutely not this autobiographical?

Steven: Isn't this the case of everyone? I think that the only thing that everyone can divide at one time of its life is the feeling to have had its broken heart. To make simple. The regret, sadness, the melancholy, anger, the unhappy love affair and the loss of an individual are for me the constant ingredients of the writing. Because it does not matter how much time you write in connection with these subjects, there will be always a multitude in way of approaching the thing and of keeping a fresh prospect. When you write in connection with a unhappy love affair, a loss or something like that, it is as if you could reach everyone. The more you will be egoistic in the way in which you write this type of things, the more you will be obliging with yourself in connection with these feelings. They are your emotions, your angers, your frustrations and you can be on everyone will include/understand what you want to say. When you write in connection with the world, of the war, science fiction, the space or anything of other, it is extremely possible that not badly of people includes/understands what you want to say. But when that you write in connection with a unhappy love affair, absolutely everyone can be potentially attached to your words. To answer your question, I am not different from everyone. Yes I already had the broken heart and these pieces are autobiographical. I already tested many regrets, sadness and melancholy. I think that these feelings form really what is Blackfield. The musical atmosphere of the group is animated by these feelings.

I asked you the question because the subject really is very developed on this new album, just like on the first in fact… Steven: Yes it is a subject on which I can write infinitely. When I write, I need to exorcize something, in a certain way of regulating my problems. In general when people meet to me they are surprised because I am not the poor guy poor wretch whom they imagine (laughter). I am actually somebody of rather happy and by normal because the majority of the negative emotions that I should feel, I in a certain way surmounted them by the process of writing and recording. I think that it is similar for Aviv. We write when we feel badly… Aviv: Not. I think that it is the life which made ego somebody of sad. I had a terrible childhood. My father was accro with alcohol and cocaine. I saw it disintegrating in front of me with 3 recoveries when I was young, which was very traumatisant for me. My best friend was killed in an accident. They are not brilliant things. I think that my way of writing comes only from there. I do not believe in happiness. I am a sad person. I never went danced in a nightclub. When my friends in Israel bought a new bicycle and were going to make some the summer, I remained all alone at home to listen of Pink Floyd with some candles. It is what I am, it is Blackfield.

Presently we spoke about the title End Of The World. It seems that there are real orchestrations in this title and some others… Steven: Yes. We used a true orchestra in Tel Aviv. The section of the cords was written by Aviv. Aviv: Into this album we introduced more tension thanks to these orchestrations. I like the combination of the guitars and the orchestra. I find that splendid. Steven made superb harmonic arrangements on these parts. Steven: Yes they have paces of anthem. I expected to intend Aviv to sing more in this new album, but it of it is nothing… Aviv: Ah! Steven: You can be relieved that it did not do it… Aviv: Ask the reason Hitler! Steven: It tested but… Aviv: I think that for Steve a singer must have a soft and pleasant voice… Steven: Not whole! I adore Tom Waits and Neil Young for example.
