The "What Are You Doing This Moment" Thread

I did permanent night shift (10pm - 10am 6 days) for 10 years, the entire time spent on the road catching sleep in short bursts at different stops and then keeping my own businesses running during the day. For the first two years I thought I was managing okay, even after a decade I thought I was pretty fucked up but still okay. Now 10 years out of that life I still can't sleep more than a few hours at a time and never get more than 5 hours a night. Even if I kid myself that I'm not a mental fuck up I certainly know my sleeping is fucked.

Every human reacts to it differently I think, but there's always some damage.

some ppl are definitely set to sleep at different times than others, but i highly doubt working a night shift actually causes brain damage

There is a physical and mental aspect to permanently changing your body clock. The physical is easy it's just a matter of forcing yourself to sleep and be awake at a different time. Being coherent and functional for the same hours can often be a little more difficult but again not hard to change once you get into a rhythm. The mental side of it is a lot harder to change because most people don't realise how their mental well being can be effected by simply changing their body clock. It does effect people different and not all people will be effected for the rest of their life but one of the biggest problems is that there is no way of saying for sure who gets effected and how much they get effected.

Shift work and the effects its had on people have been a big thing in my area in recent years and I know a lot of people who have been involved in studies to look at the physical and mental effects short and long term shift work has had on them from a variety of industries. In some ways I wish I'd got involved in the studies but 20 years ago when a lot of them started I was one of the people who believed working shift work was nothing more than changing your sleeping patterns.

I'm naturally a night owl, which is why I have an issue with getting to bed on time, so in the morning I drink coffee to amp myself up. Typically the ideal for me is to sleep 9 hours, but when working I sleep 5-7 hours because I have issues going to sleep. Also, I'm a complete monster of a person if I don't get enough sleep. I annoy myself with how moody I am. My boyfriend works nights now, and I've noticed he gets really cranky in the mornings waking up (because I've been home for summer break I've noticed it more) and he's not normally a cranky person at all. I think partially because it's harder to manage your time well when you work nights and you feel like you have no social life, and don't do much but go to work and come home. And I think maybe the lack of Vitamin D too has something to do with it.

Damn, you guys are making me worried. I am going to a job interview today with a good chance of getting the job, but the only problem is that it is a night shift position. I used to volunteer nights as an EMT so I know that I can do it, but I wasnt doing enough hours to have to permanently alter my sleep schedule. Im not sure if I could do it for more than a year or two.

Does anyone else drink way too many fucking energy drinks to keep going? I bought a tub of G Fuel for a breakfast drink and usually have 1-2 more throughout a day depending on how bad it is. I switched to sugar free varieties because the sugar crash just isn’t worth it. Bang is pretty good. Ultra Paradise Monster and the 300 mg Caffeine Rockstars are also acceptable.

I drink energy drinks occasionally. I brew coffee at my desk when I'm at work and I'll typically only grab an energy drink at work if the coffee isn't working for whatever reason. If I get any more than 4-5 coffees worth of caffeine during the day, I crash pretty hard when I get home.

I've never had a Bang, but I typically go to the Black Cherry Mt Dew Kickstarts if I need something with caffeine other than coffee.

@CiG
there's this recessive-gene medical condition where sunlight makes a person sleepy
i think @HadesRagnazrath might have this condition,
which should be fine if he gets some sort of nightshift job that lets him go to sleep at about sunrise

a person's default sleeping rhythm is determined/controlled by sunrise
some people like @HadesRagnazrath naturally get sleepy at sunrise
some people like @Slammed and @CiG just naturally get up at sunrise

Thinking of a one off campaign before we start a main D&D group at the house.

We got high the other night and started following a Bob Ross video, and here is my mid progress and finished product

There is a lot of factors that come into play deciding how a person actually handles working night shift. Medical studies here are showing that everyone that does it long term does have some adverse side effects later in life but what those effects might be are very wide and varied. For some the long term effects are only shitty sleeping habits that are hard to break, but there is medication for that, its the same medication doctors prescribe to some people starting shiftwork who need their body clock to adjust quickly. But for others there is deeper issues that may not arise for a decade or more after shift work stops. But the thing is none of it is guaranteed to hit every person and there are things an individual can do to make things easier for themselves while doing shift work. I don't regret all my years of night shift for a number of reasons, getting me off the shitty band circuit and the promise of decent money was a big motivator, but if I had my time again I would definitely think more about when I slept and how I slept while I was working those long hours.

No he's just a lazy piece of shit with no responsibilities or life structure.

i could see there being evolutionary reasons for that or some shit

i dont think i have a condition or anything but i get hyped up at night...its the one time i have where i can do what i want without anyone bothering me. i also just generally feel better at night. even during the school year

Night shift is horrible, dont recommend it except out of desperation

sitting here bored as fuck. i want caffeine and or nicotine but were out of sodas and i usually dont vape unless my parents are alseep

And your beer has been drunk. I am still somewhat hungover from celebrating last night, lol. Apparently it is really hard to get a job when you are relatively inexperienced in your field and have a 5 (I guess now it is 6) year gap in relevant experience (long story, but ive explained it here before). Fortunately my brother's girlfriend's mother used to be the head boss at this company and sent recommendation letters to some of the lab managers for me because she loves me. I almost had the job in February (I think I was bragging about getting a job around that time), but then the company unexpectedly put a freeze on the hiring. I interviewed with 3 other departments in the company in the meantime, each time getting out-selected. I finally got a call last week from HR that the guy who wanted to hire me before brought my name up as a potential applicant and wanted me to come in for an interview. At the interview, he eventually told me that he is going to hire me, and I imagine that his decision was already pre-determined since he confirmed back in February that he was going to hire me.

It's for a medical technologist position btw. Everything from testing for AIDS to hepatitis to vitamin D.
