gonna be watching some of the magnus carlsen invitational on youtube shortly. it's the most lucrative online chess tournament ever and starts today. it's absolutely stacked with talent; the 8 players include the top 5 in the world, the best blitz player in the world and the best teenager in the world (firouzja, the first super-phenomenon since carlsen). eight different nationalities too: norwegian, french, russian, chinese, japanese, iranian, dutch and american.
it's a round robin where everyone plays everyone, each match is a best of four rapidplay games with a tiebreak 'armageddon match' if it's 2-2--which works kind of like away goals do in football/soccer, where black gets less time on the clock but only needs to draw to get the win, so white has to really go for it. once the round robin is completed the top four will go into a straight knockout.
