does anyone know anything about the legal side to us doing this? I mean, I'm not sure how copyright law works when it comes to offering a cover song as a free download

From what I've read if it's for free download it's no problem at all, the whole royalties and copyright thing comes into play when we sell it.

I know this cause I remember an awesome band called Beatallica which did mixed cover versions of Metallica and the beatles and they gave away their albums for free download because of this

I would say end of july, to have all songs tracked and mixed, hopefully

Actually, whether you charge anything for the song or not makes no differece from the copyright point of view. It's still an infringement to make the song available for the general public without paying the composer and lyricist.

Of course the record companies are more eager to go after cases where there is money to be made. Sueing a sincere community tribute which is distributed for free seems such a bad publicity move, that I doubt any executive with his brain intact would want to go there.

Beatallica got their fair share of legal trouble, but ultimately were saved by Lars. Or that's what they say at least

Anyway, don't want to be a party pooper. The tribute will be just fine.

And if it's not too late already, I'd like to give "Night People" a shot

I was giving it some thought .... if it seems like we should be ok doing it as a free download tribute (based on what kintaro said) , maybe there is some way to set it all up as part of one of Dio's charities or something? Like make a $5 donation to one of the charities he worked with (children of the night, rock autism, etc...) and then you get to download all the tunes. Might make it even more of a bad move for someone to try and squash it

I wouldn't even know how something like that might work but it also keeps things in line with what Dio was about too

Will be working on the song still, though, just in case some other group of people cannot make the deadline. Or something.

I sent a pm to all the singers participating in the project to go to the thread about long live rock n' roll, to see if we can organize that whole super epicness million vocals kinda thing planned for that song.

On another note, anybody have any suggestions for artwork? this will only be released in digital form but I still would like it to have a complete artwork like a normal album, so if anybody does artwork or knows anyone who could do some for free please post here or pm me!

I think you gotta ask from someone outside the forum... It's just that not too many guys with some quality artwork skills come around and check this thread..
