It's an expression. I wasn't being literal, obviously.

And rats have a lot more personality than hamsters tbh. Rats are extremely intelligent (about on the same level of dogs) and are a hell of a lot more affectionate than hamsters.

And I see nothing wrong with people referring to their pets as "babies", even though it's not something I do myself. I call my dogs "boy-o"...not sure if that's better or worse than the babies thing.
