I'm at home and the wife is working at a festival until next week and I'm spending far too much time sitting about getting wasted and blasting metal and watching tv. Or just the right amount of time. I dunno. I'm supposed to go to a gig tonight to see some local sludge bands and I'n hoping my faculties will still be in order enough that I don't collapse in a puddle of my own muntedness while I'm watching them play.

What are the bands? Only Australian Sludge band I know that's any good is Iron Worzel.

That's retarded, there are plenty of shitty genres with qualities very similar to great genres. Also not all Sludge is about Groove, show me where the fuck Grief and Noothgrush have Groove.

Why is it dumb though? Take the Star Trek franchise for example. Part of what makes that franchise so great is the fact that its universe is so large and encompassing; and still, 95 percent of the time, despite being so encompassing, it manages to maintain total continuity.

When it comes to canon, when you introduce discontinuity, the entire franchise is damaged. The piece of art becomes flawed, and its legitimacy as a quality piece suffers. It's just sloppy.

This is why, again when it comes to Star Trek, movies like Star Trek 2009 fucking blow. "Alternate universe" or not; it utilizes bad science, discontinuity when it comes to established canon, and all in all is just a sloppy action flick that cheapens the franchise.

I put forth the Mortal Kombat movie that never quite made it as an excellent example of cinematic creativity straying from the original idea. Can you seriously say this would not have been fucking awesome as a full length?



I guess if you're really into something and they finally release a movie, and its not true to the franchise, that's super disappointing. But you shouldn't declare it a terrible movie, just declare it a terrible representation.

I put forth the Mortal Kombat movie that never quite made it as an excellent example of cinematic creativity straying from the original idea. Can you seriously say this would not have been fucking awesome as a full length?



I guess if you're really into something and they finally release a movie, and its not true to the franchise, that's super disappointing. But you shouldn't declare it a terrible movie, just declare it a terrible representation.

But the thing is, when it comes to some* franchises (such as the aforementioned Star Trek, where its strength is in its fifty years continuity ever-so-skillfully weaved together), a terrible representation IS a terrible movie. It shows sloppy writing, and a total disregard for the established storyline of the entire universe in question.

I mean, yeah, Star Trek 2009 may be an entertaining bit of action, but being entertaining alone does not a good movie make, especially when it is hacked together so sloppily. When it comes to some franchises, continuity is literally sacrosanct.

I enjoyed that Mortal Kombat clip, but in all honesty, I'm not big enough on the franchise to actually care about whether or not it's canon. I'm sure if I was super into it I would probably have a more in-depth opinion.

This paragraph negates everything you've said, far as I'm concerned. Being butthurt about accuracy negatively affects one's ability to enjoy something otherwise excellent, and thus, the butthurt is counterproductive to appreciation of cinema. You should be more objective in all things. You're basically too offended to even give it a chance.

I'm not exactly sure where to post this, but this is pretty interesting.

So this Derren Brown guy is a mentalist, a magician who performs feats that exhibit extradionary mental power such as mind reading. He's basically a hypnosis. I watched the video on youtube and now I'm just trying to find the show and watch more of it.

It's ten minutes long but pretty interesting. Always wondered if stuff like that could work on me. I can't focus too well, so I doubt it but it's interesting to read up on.

I was just watching a video about a psychic woman that got exposed by a journalist, they got an actor to approach her and pay for her services ($400) in relation to his missing sister/daughter (I forget) and the photo of the young girl they use is a photo of the journalist when she was a kid. The psychic says she's dead, was likely killed with a rock and then points to the general area on a map she declares they'll find her. The next day they confront her about it and her face? Priceless.

Also that brilliant South Park episode comes to mind.
