Guess BarrysWorld woulda been my first forum.

Having been online and received all kindsa cruel and unusual messages since I was a child makes it pretty hard to feel sympathy for the attention whores that get trolled on Twitter and shit.

The Gunbound freeboard was the first message board I posted on. Posting on there, playing Gunbound, listening to Black Sabbath and watching porn pretty much took up my whole summer when I was 13.

Not sure which was my first forum, either the Blind Guardian forum which I joined 1999 or some Counterstrike forum for 3D modelling/skinning (modding a mod) which should have been at the same time as I started playing CS in 1999 too.
i've probably mentioned this before but on CS source i have over 2500 hours playtime and 76,000+ rounds JUST on office. that's over 100 solid days of my life i'll never get back.
In years 9 and 10 I had about 60% attendance at school because I occasionally get migraines and people are gullible as shit but really it was just de_dust.
Luckily alcohol and sex and guitar took over towards the end of year 10 so I don't have to live in basements.

i decided to completely stop playing when i realised it was a genuine addiction and that i was opening the game just instinctively sometimes without even making the decision to play it, and was no longer enjoying it

i feel like that's a pretty rigid definition of addiction they're using, but if not then yeah i wasn't addicted at all. maybe more of an obsessive compulsion.
I joined black-sabbath.com in... 2004 I think? Then herzeleid.com in 05, and the now-defunct Wizards of the Coast boards in 06. Then here in 07. I joined Mtgsalvation two or three times but they were no fun. I got permabanned each time because I constantly voiced that newer Magic was starting to suck and apparently that was "trolling". Mtgsalvation was AIDS.

Use Magiccards.info. Anything Wizards does online blows.tangentially related but I hate how the card comment/rating feature on gatherer has been broken for literally yearsI used to love reading people's comments on cards even though I barely even play the game.

I'm probably a bit sensitive because when I used to complain about certain editions of Warhammer: 40k douchebags would always whip out the ol' "hurrr genwunner dickhead hurrr" and it was so annoying.

Mtg has gone abit downhill for two reasons.
#1: The direction the art has gone is waaay too streamlined and clean, which most of the time makes it more soulless imo. Sure the sets are more even and the older art had way lower lows but also higher high. Older sets generally feels less flashy and more obscure and arcane.
#2: The power creep in specifically creatures. I'm tired of all creatures having 2-3 good abilities and also stats that are annoyingly good. Just look at for example Deathrite Shaman. 1 mana 1/2 with 3 good abilities. Yeah that seems reasonable. Leovold is another one on the same theme. IMO the most boring games are when both players just play splashy creature after splashy creature and hope to win the value war. I like grind but it should be with finesse, not just big bombs.
I think wizards has realized this and in the latest sets they've upped the spell power and lowered the creature power which is good.
With this said MtG is still awsome and they do alot of things right so I wont say newer sets suck or anything, just that I liked the direction, both in art and game design in older sets abit more.
As for Games Workshop and Warhammer: They have gone downhill waaay more imo. Mostly because of the cartoony over the top models nowdays which looks rediculous. Just compare the size of old (3rd-4th fantasy) edition greater daemons or Volkmar the Grim. The new ones are awful.
About the rules, I haven't played the newest editions so I can't really comment but as far as I've tester I don't think they've gone in the right direction either.

Are you crazy? I'll admit I'm not familiar with Volkmar but the greater daemon models look so much better now and there really isn't any comparing with old edition 40k to now, it is much better now. 7th edition was admittedly pretty bad but 8th so far seems like a huge improvement and the models these days are mostly much better.
I can't help but assume this is an opinion based almost entirely on nostalgia.
