ALLY TO GOOD, NIGHTMARE TO YOU
Gustav Holst - Mars, The Bringer of War
Had to be here. Metal as FUUUUCCCCKKKKKKKK
10/10
R.A. The Rugged Man - Uncommon Valor
It's alright. The female vocal sample seems an odd fit for a song about war.
6/10
Blue Oyster Cult - Veteran of the Psychic Wars
Every BOC song in this game so far has been fantastic (seriously, I must've listened to Unknown Tongue like 50 times after the Occultism round, so thanks for that one Talos (EDIT: Aaaaand now I'm listening to it again. SPEAK TO ME IN MANY VOICES. MAKE THEM ALL SOUND LIKE ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEE.)) and this particular one also lends its title to a very prolific and respectable metal reviewer on RYM so my expectations were especially high. But I gotta say, I think I prefer their earlier blues/hard rock sound to... whatever this is. It's cool though.
7/10
Elend - Sunwar the Dead
Horrible and tempestuous like a battle. I feel bad I seem to always give your songs 9s no country but in my defense you're often submitting challenging stuff I'm never sure how to feel about after just a few listens.
9/10
José Feliciano - Masters of War
8/10
Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel - I'll Meet You In Poland Baby
Holy fuck what even is this. As I was listening to the first minute I quietly wished to myself that it wasn't just the lead-in to a conventional song. My wish came true.
10/10
The Cranberries - Zombie
This song has nostalgic appeal for me because I remember hearing it coming out of my older sister's room at deafening volume during her 'angsty' phase. I could never make out the words of the chorus (and only recently found out what the song was called) but it was unforgettable all the same.
9/10
Organized Konfusion - Prisoners of War
4/10
Redgum - I Was Only 19
6/10
Yes - Harold Land
I really love Jon Anderson's vocals on the early Yes albums especially, such a warm and vulnerable voice. The debut album is a criminally underrated masterpiece IMO, though this song sticks out a bit for being a song about war on an album of songs about unrestrained affection. Anyway, it's practically perfect aside from that tacky intro/outro.
9/10
Pink Floyd - Goodbye Blue Sky
Shit band, shit song, amazing animation though.
3/10
Krzysztof Penderecki - Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima
Pretty traumatic. I imagine Elend were influenced by this.
9/10
Actually a pretty great playlist on the whole. I liked that, as was the case with the Ocean playlist, the submissions matched the gravity of the theme, for the most part. (My own submission actually felt like the lightest song on here.)
